CAREY ISLAND

Carey Island is perhaps one of the most traditional and cultural islands around the country. It is located in the state of Selangor.

The island is owned by Golden Hope Plantation as it is largely made up of oil palm estates. Situated around the northwest of Selangors beach town Morib it is known for being the natural home of the Mah Meri people. Pronounced as Mak Miri, the community here are known to be one of the prominent aboriginal tribe community who makes the most fine woodcarvings as depicted in their ‘moyang’ culture which is a form of ancestral spirit belief.

Story telling is s common activity among the Mah Meri as the legends and the ancestors are always told to visitors in tales and figurines. There really aren’t much to see around the oil palm estates here but if you like, you will need to first obtain prior permission.

Most of the people here now are employed in the plantations and the farms around here although their traditions and culture are still very much preserved. To get here, you can come from Kuala Lumpur towards Teluk Panglima Garang. You can take the Klang-Banting road and from there you need to get through some villages where there is a bridge that connects you to Carey.
